Original injectors on the LM4 5.3L usually make it to 130,000-150,000 miles before flow inconsistency becomes noticeable. The LS2 6.0L injectors wear faster, around 110,000-130,000 miles, because they cycle at higher pressure and flow rates. Trucks driven in stop-and-go traffic or hot climates see earlier failures. If your SSR sat for long periods between drives, the ethanol in modern fuel degrades internal seals faster than continuous use would.

Can I replace SSR injectors myself or should I take it to a shop?

The SSR engine bay is tight but accessible from above once you remove the decorative cover. You don't need to drop the fuel tank. Main challenge is the fuel rail bolts—they're torqued tight and corrode from heat cycling. Use a fuel pressure gauge to bleed the system before disconnecting lines. Budget three hours if you've done injectors before, five if this is your first time. The electrical connectors are fragile, so don't yank them. A shop charges 2-3 hours labor plus parts.

What symptoms specifically point to bad injectors versus other issues?

Check fuel trims with a scan tool. If long-term fuel trim exceeds +15% or -15% on one bank, suspect injectors or a vacuum leak. Swap coils between cylinders first—if the misfire moves, it was ignition. If the misfire stays on the same cylinder after swapping the coil, pull that injector and check the screen filter for debris. The LS engines also throw P0201-P0208 codes when injector driver circuits fail, but that's usually the PCM, not the injector itself.

Do SSR injectors have any specific known issues?

The retaining clips rust solid on SSRs because of how low the engine sits. Road spray and winter salt get everywhere. Before you try yanking injectors, soak the clips with penetrating oil overnight. The other quirk is spider crack failures in the plastic fuel rail on early 2003 models—not the injectors themselves, but it causes identical symptoms. Inspect the rail closely when you're in there. Some techs replace both at the same mileage to avoid doing the job twice.
