How long do fuel injectors last in a Chevy Lumina?

Original injectors typically make it to 110,000-140,000 miles before failing. The 3.1L LH0 engines tend to clog injectors from carbon earlier than the 3.8L L36. If you're still running the factory set past 130,000 miles, plan on replacement soon. Ethanol fuel accelerates seal degradation—Luminas driven infrequently fail sooner. Short-trip city driving creates more carbon deposits than highway miles. Budget for the job before you're stranded with a no-start condition.

Can I replace Lumina injectors myself or should I take it to a shop?

This job sits right at the DIY/shop boundary. You need to remove the entire upper intake plenum to access the fuel rail. The manifold bolts torque to specific sequences, and the EGR valve is sandwiched in there. Figure four hours if you've done intake work before, six if you haven't. The fuel rail mounting bolts strip easily—replace them, don't reuse. You'll need new upper and lower intake gaskets, fuel rail O-rings, and injector seals. Depressurize the fuel system properly or you'll spray fuel everywhere.

What codes appear when Lumina injectors fail?

P0300 random misfire is the most common starting point. As injectors worsen, you'll add P0301 through P0306 for specific cylinders. P0171 and P0174 lean codes show up when injectors clog and restrict flow—the computer adds fuel but can't compensate enough. P0201 through P0206 indicate injector circuit failures, but those are rare unless the injector coil is completely open. The 3.8L engines throw P0174 more often than the 3.1L because the rear bank runs leaner from intake design. Don't chase vacuum leaks if you've got high mileage—test injector spray patterns first.

Do Luminas have any specific injector problems I should know about?

The upper intake manifold gaskets fail frequently on these engines, and techs often misdiagnose this as bad injectors because the symptoms overlap. Always pressure-test the intake before replacing injectors. The throttle body coolant passage crossover develops internal leaks that contaminate the intake tract—look for coolant residue around the injectors. These engines are interference designs, so if an injector sticks open and floods a cylinder, you can hydraulic-lock and bend valves on startup. Check for fuel in the oil before cranking after the car has sat.
