Quattro models driven hard see earlier failure because boost stress compounds injector wear. If you're throwing multiple misfire codes and fuel trims are off, you're at the end of injector life regardless of mileage.

Can I replace Audi TT injectors myself?

On the 1.8T it's straightforward—pull the engine cover, disconnect fuel rail, swap injectors. Two-hour job with basic tools. The 2.0T FSI is harder because you need a high-pressure fuel system depressurization procedure and the injectors are buried under the intake manifold. You'll also need VCDS or equivalent to code new injectors to the ECU. The direct injection system runs over 2000 PSI, so if you're not comfortable with that pressure, let a shop handle it.

What symptoms point to bad injectors versus carbon buildup?

Carbon buildup causes rough idle that clears up above 2500 RPM once airflow increases. Bad injectors misfire consistently at all RPM ranges and get worse under load. Pull spark plugs—if electrodes are tan or white, you've got lean misfires from clogged injectors. Black sooty plugs mean overfueling from leaking injectors. Run a fuel trim scan: if long-term trims exceed +15% or -15%, injectors are the problem, not just carbon.

Do I need to replace the high-pressure fuel pump with FSI injectors?

Not automatically, but check pump output before installing new injectors. The 2.0T FSI pump should hold 1500-2000 PSI at idle. If pressure drops below 1200 PSI, the pump's cam follower is worn and you'll damage new injectors within months. The cam follower is a known weak point on BWA and BPY engines.
