BMW 3 Series Fuel Injector Problems — Complete Guide for 328i, 335i, and E46
BMW's 3 Series is legendary for driving dynamics — but the fuel injection system, particularly on the N52 (328i) and N54/N55 (335i) engines, has well-documented injector issues that BMW owners need to know about.
This guide covers the most common fuel injector problems on the E46, E90/E92, and F30 3 Series, how to diagnose them, and what replacement costs look like.
The N54 335i — BMW's Most Notorious Injector Problem
The N54-powered 335i (2007-2010) has a known injector issue that BMW actually extended the warranty to cover. The high-pressure direct fuel injectors on the N54 can develop a "tick" or "rattle" sound at idle, and in some cases, they leak internally — causing rough running, misfires, and high fuel trim values.
Symptoms specific to N54 injector failure:
- Distinct ticking noise at idle that disappears above 2,000 RPM
- Rough idle, especially when cold
- Check engine light with codes 2AAA (high-pressure pump) or 2B2C-2B2F (individual injector faults)
- High long-term fuel trim values (above +15%)
- Hesitation under hard acceleration
BMW issued Technical Service Bulletin SI B13 05 09 covering the N54 injector issue. If your 335i is still within the extended warranty period (10 years/120,000 miles from original sale), BMW should cover the injectors at no cost. Check your warranty status first before paying out of pocket.
BMW 328i (N52 Engine) Injector Issues
The N52-powered 328i is generally more reliable than the N54, but injector problems do occur — usually from carbon buildup on the injector tips (a common issue with all direct injection engines) or failed injector O-rings.
Common 328i injector symptoms:
- Rough idle after carbon buildup accumulates (typically 60,000-100,000 miles)
- Individual cylinder misfire codes (P0301-P0306)
- Slight fuel smell — indicates a leaking injector O-ring
- Reduced power and fuel economy
For the N52, try a professional walnut shell blasting of the intake valves first — this removes the carbon buildup that causes most rough-idle complaints before blaming the injectors.
E46 3 Series (1999-2005) Injector Problems
The E46 used port fuel injection (not direct injection), making its injectors simpler and easier to service. Common E46 injector issues:
- Leaking O-rings — The original O-rings harden and crack with age. A leaking O-ring causes a fuel smell and occasionally a fire risk. Replace all O-rings whenever you service the injectors.
- Clogged injectors — High-mileage E46s (150,000+ miles) often develop partially clogged injectors. Professional ultrasonic cleaning usually restores them to spec.
- Failed injector body — On very high mileage engines, the injector body itself can crack. These need full replacement.
How to Diagnose BMW 3 Series Injector Problems
Step 1 — Read BMW-specific fault codes. A generic OBD-II reader will show P-codes, but BMW fault codes are more detailed. If possible, use a BMW-specific scanner (Carly, BimmerCode, or a shop-grade scanner) to read chassis-specific codes.
Step 2 — Check fuel trims. With a scanner monitoring live data, check short-term and long-term fuel trims at idle and at cruise. Values above ±10% indicate a fuel delivery problem. High positive trims mean the engine is running lean — possibly a clogged injector. High negative trims mean running rich — possibly a leaking injector.
Step 3 — Listen for the N54 tick. On the 335i, the injector tick is distinctive — a rapid metallic tapping that changes character with engine temperature and disappears above 2,000 RPM.
Step 4 — Check for fuel smell. Any fuel smell from the engine bay on an E46 or E90 warrants immediate inspection. A leaking injector O-ring is the most common cause.
